Charleston Collegiate School and The Preserve at Fenwick Plantation Enhance School’s Outdoor Education Program

Charleston Collegiate School and The Preserve at Fenwick Plantation have partnered to establish a history and science-based, after school kayak club to expand upon the school’s existing Outdoor Education Program. The Preserve has granted the school access to the property and its community docks on deep water Penny Creek to serve as a launch point for the ultimate outdoor classroom. The curriculum will focus on educating students on South Carolina’s history and its marsh, river and harbor ecology, all from the front row seat of a kayak. Once the site of colonial settlements and battles of The Revolutionary War and The Civil War, The Preserve at Fenwick has a centuries old story to tell. The opportunity for students to learn on the actual site where much of our local history took place is an incredible tool. The goal of the program is to engage and inspire students through hands-on learning.

Charleston Collegiate students are involved in the entire implementation of this program. The school has approached local businesses in hopes of acquiring a fleet of kayaks (via corporate sponsorships) to serve the Charleston Collegiate community. In less than a month, a fleet of 15 boats has been acquired! The fleet was made possible through contributions from Glover Fence, Buck Lumber, EPIC Development Group, The Preserve at Fenwick Plantation, Bohicket Creek Boat rentals, Wheeler Industries, the owners of Jim & Nicks and Tzatzikis and other private donors. To recognize the sponsors, each donor’s company logo has been placed on a designated kayak.

With the help of EPIC Development Group, a team of students, faculty and parents met at The Preserve on Saturday, January 28, and constructed kayak storage racks that will help keep the fleet well maintained and organized.

Johns Island and Charleston Amenities

Johns Island really does have an incredible amount of resources right in our own back yard. We've put together a short list of restaurants, doctor's offices and hospitals, activities and schools near The Preserve to help prospective homeowners get familiar with the area and all it has to offer. There are so many more we'd like to include, so this list is not exhaustive by any means. If we've left off your Johns Island business or one of your favorite places, let us know at info@thepreserveatfenwickplantation.com, and we'll be sure to add it!
